The silly season is well and truly upon us, which means that this will be the final Community Roundup for the year. After next week I plan to be sunning myself on the beach for at least 2 weeks, and all computing will be kept to a bare minimum. Gotta love a good NZ summer!
The UX Mastery community has grown into a thing of real beauty over the 12 months that our forums have been in existence. Our membership currently stands at around 440, slightly short of the 500 that I was hoping for… so now is your chance to go and round up 60 of your closest UX mates and sign them up.
UXmas in the community
On a more serious note, we have achieved some fantastic things. Most notable in my book is the number of contributions from community members to this year’s UXMas. Today’s article is from long time member Paddy, Day 6 was our very own ASHM, Day 14 is brought to you by the lovely Natalie Eustace, with veterans maadonna and Angela Schmeidel Randall weighing in on Days 3 and 13 respectively. If you haven’t checked out their articles already, make sure you do – there is some cracker stuff (see what I did there?).
Ask the UXperts
I hosted the last Ask the UXperts for 2014 in our Campfire chatroom last week, and it was a session with a difference. Our very own Matt and Luke were the stars of the hour, and we were talking about the upcoming redesign of UX Mastery. If you are interested in what went down in that session, you can read the transcript here. The most exciting aspect of the redesign from my perspective is that we will be migrating our forums off vBulletin and integrating them more fully into our site. We really value your input on these kinds of changes, so if you have any questions or comments you can let us know in this thread.
What do you need?
The one year mark is a good time to sit back and take stock of what we’re doing and what we could do better. We designed our forum structure based on what we thought would make the most sense. Ultimately though, it’s what you think that matters most, so if there is something that you’re not getting from us, we want to know. We tried a Jobs Board for a while but removed it because it didn’t seem to be adding much value – you can get that stuff elsewhere. I notice a lot of people looking for mentors, we get people asking for advice on portfolios and less frequently, interviews. The wealth of knowledge within the community means that we have the opportunity to help you out with those things, but if there are gaps in what we offer, please let me know and we’ll do our best to help you out, whether that be with an Ask the UXperts session, a forum thread, or something entirely different.
Some interesting threads to check out.
- This is my all time favourite thread on our entire forum. You don’t get more UXy than Post-it notes.
- If anyone is particularly good with wrangling Photoshop templates, jump in here and help a brother out.
- I’m heading to World IA Day in Wellington next year. Is anyone else celebrating it?
- We’re big on Christmas in my family. Do you have any strange traditions?
And on that note, I’m going to sign off for the year. Our forums will be moderated over the holidays, so make sure you stop by if you need us.
Take care out there.
